AMS PAVEMENT PRESERVATION

AMS PAVING: CP-2 BITUMINOUS BINDER COURSE

CP-2 is an extremely flexible base course that can be used for new construction of existing gravel roads or over existing, but severely deteriorated roadways. The material is designed to provide a flexible base course material on low ADT roads—roads where a rigid Hot Mix can not be successfully used.

The roadway is re-profiled by a paver placing #57 aggregate at an average depth of 2 inches, followed by penetrating the aggregate with 1.50 Gals/SY with a soft asphalt emulsion. An application of #8 aggregate is applied to choke in the #57s. Typically, a CP-2 Bituminous Binder Course is then followed by a Double Chip Seal which waterproofs the binder and provides an inexpensive flexible wearing surface.

CP-2 has been successfully used since the 1960s. The process continues to gaining popularity as budgets shrink and costs rise. CP-2 is an extremely cost effective, long term solution for low volume roads.

The open textured base course allows water to pass laterally through the bottom layer of the CP-2 without fear of frost damage due to the high air void and asphalt content of the material. For this reason, it can be used for roadways which exhibit poor drainage.

BENEFITS OF CP-2 BITUMINOUS BINDER COURSE

  • Most flexible paving system available for low ADT roads
  • Requires very little base preparation, as material “bridges” the problem areas of the roadway
  • Able to be placed on roads where the only other option would be total reconstruction
  • Extremely cost effective when compared to the alternative of total reconstruction
  • Process works extremely well in areas with poor drainage
  • Environmentally friendly “green” paving material requiring no heating of aggregate
